The Step 1 takes the place of a lash curler which is traditionally used to lift lashes prior to mascara application, Make Up Artists would then also use a small fan brush or comb to separate all the lashes before finally applying a volumizing mascara (Step 2).  

The Step 1 end contains a lightweight formula used with the small, detailed brush to lift and separate each lash while the Step 2 end contains a creamy, rich formula with blue and black pigment for added depth of blackness and a specially designed spiral, tapered brush to volumize and coat lashes with the right amount of product.
